Elway vs The BOZ

John Elway

One of the most interesting games I worked was the Broncos – Seahawks 1987 season opener at Mile High Stadium. Brian Bosworth purposely and very publicly intimidates John Elway with a questionable hit. Then Bosworth trash talked John Elway in the media. This enrages the Denver Broncos fans. The fans went out and purchased thousands of these “Anti-BOZ” t-shirts to wear next time the Broncos played the Seahawks (in Denver).

The fans were so worked-up against Bosworth that as Broncos security, our supervisor tasked my brother and me to “shadow” Bosworth and make sure no Broncos fans hassled him enough to distract him from the game. While we were talking to Bosworth on the sidelines, he said to us, “See all these haters wearing their anti-Boz t-shirts?”

Not sure where he was going with this line of reasoning, I answered, “Okay.”

A huge sly smile formed across Bosworth’s face as he said, “My company printed them.”

Bosworth didn’t say anything else. That’s all that needed to be said. Nough said.

I told a few people about this incident, but none of them ever really believed me. I suppose the plot seemed somewhat implausible. Who knows? I do know however, that a video chronicling Bosworth’s life addressed this very sneaky but clever, clever scheme!

Brian Bosworth revealed in the ESPN video that he owned the silk-screening company that printed the t-shirts. The joke was on the Broncos fans!

“Before the first game of the season, versus the Denver Broncos, Bosworth trash talked Denver quarterback John Elway. 10,000 Denver fans wore $15 T-shirts reading “BAN THE BOZ”, but did not know that Bosworth’s company manufactured the shirts.” [5]
