Back Stage

People are actors. And all the world is a stage. Back stage is where we prepare for our performances on front stage. This is where we can let our guard down and do stuff we wouldn’t necessarily want others to know about. Back stage is where we can rehearse and try out different acts.

Back stage isn’t a place. Instead, back stage is defined by what is going on there. One moment our bathroom may serve as back stage. But the second someone walks in that space, the scene become front stage. If someone is putting on an act, any sort of act, it’s happening on front stage.

The main way we use it in relationships is by managing our impressions of how we look to the target person we have feeling for, are in a relationships with.

An extreme example is below:

“HITLER’S BACKGROUND COULDN’T BE EXPOSED. IT WOULD NOT MATCH UP TO THE IMAGE HE HAD SO CAREFULLY CRAFTED.”

Adolph Hitler

Hitler didn’t want people to know about his background. It didn’t “match” his presentation of self.

The Nazi regime was one of the first to use mass media to such an extent of first creating and then consolidating a collective conscience.  But behind the scenes, things weren’t so pretty; there it was more in line with mass murder.
