Counter-Uncovering Move

Counter-Uncovering Move: is a reaction to an attempted uncovering move. Once some information is “found out” or discovered, the person attempts to redefine the situation and couch it in a more favorable light. Talking your way out of trouble would be an example.

Example: a woman discovered her male lover’s pornography. She confronted him and asked what it was. Her lover made the excuse that it was something he was saving for “his friend.” The goal in these counter-uncovering cases is to attempt to get other to redefine the situation so that they won’t be “in trouble.” Shifting the blame is normally a counter-uncovering move.

The Movie CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was a movie full of dramaturgy. The dinner scene is an especially good example of a counter-uncovering move.
